All About Ich
Starting Your Aquarium
Every aquarium you purchase from the Tropical Shop is a complete system. This generally includes the tank, a cover, light, filter, pump, tubing, heater, thermometer, gravel, and water conditioner. The type of filters will vary with the system, and this is something we will discuss with you as you make your selection. Different types of aquariums have different optimum filter systems, so deciding what you want to keep in your aquarium is the natural starting point. Choosing between a peaceful community tank, an aggressive large cichlid tank, a planted natural aquarium or a marine reef tank means choosing vastly different types of equipment. To see the difference betweeen these types of habitats and learn the different aquarist's skill re quired by each, come in to the store and we will give you the tour. After you have your aquarium home and filled with water, the next step is the crucial one in determining the success or failure of your new endeavor. The initial stocking and break-in of a new aquarium is often the hardest part of the hobby for many people because it requires patience. The tendency is to want to go out and buy all of the fish that attracted you to the hobby in the first place. Proceed slowly! Before you buy a single fish, read the New Tank Syndrome page, then read it again - understanding the nitrogen cycle is the foundation of successful aquarium keeping!
After you have had the Tropical Shop staff guide you through the initial stocking of your aquarium, it becomes crucial to monitor the water for ammonia and nitrite to know when it is safe to add to your population. Water testing is free at the store. All you have to do is bring in a sample (maybe half a cup) and we will show you how far along you are on the graph - you did read the New Tank Syndrome page, didn't you? If you have any questions about starting your tank, feel free to email The Tropical Shop and we will do our best to answer them and guide you through the start up.
For another perspective on start-up and some good links to more aquarium sites, try the New Tank Guide. It's maintained by a former Tropical Shop customer, so you know he must be doing it right!
Every fish you buy from the Tropical Shop is guaranteed. Just in case you didn't keep the copy of the warranty or the acclimation instructions that was in your bag when you took your new fish home, here is another copy for your records.
