Bird Safety
Silverstone or Teflon cookware traditionally heads the list as one of your homes great hidden dangers for your bird. It has been widely proven that the fumes from this popular no-stick coating are deadly to our avian friends. At normal cooking temperatures, there is little worry, but Dupont has isssued warnings that the fumes from an over heated pan are deadly. Check the above link to get the full story (in a watered down, camouflaged corporate sort of way). The site does have a good all around bird safety list that you owe your pet to read.
Many things that are dangerous to your bird you are aware of through common sense - tobacco, alcohol, cleaning products, etc. If it’s not good for you, it’s definitely bad for your bird. Chocolate and coffee are two other popular people foods you shouldn’t share, but there are also some less obvious taboos. While fruits and vegetables are to be encouraged, avocados are an exception and can be dangerous to birds. Fruit seeds and pits should be avoided because they can be toxic and highly acidic, which can cause health problems.
Another favorite, Iceberg lettuce, isn't good because it's mostly water and can cause diarrhea.
Because your bird will want to chew and will see no difference between an antique chair and a piece of 2 x 4, you need to direct his actions in acceptable directions. Always provide toys for destruction. People who don't buy their parrot toys because "he just chews them up" are missing the point. That your bird chews his toys up is exactly why you need to keep them around. Wood, rubber, metal, and rope are generally safe materials for this activity.

The plants on this list have parts which are in some way dangerous to your bird. While toxicity is not always certain, it is a good guideline for safety. |
