I read the term "petabytes" in a trade mag for the first time today. A petabyte is 1,024 terabytes. I suppose that means a whole new class of hard drives coming down the pike...

vi

written with viI am writing this entry in vi to get some practice with it. Once upon a time, I was a Dos person who was at home with the command line. Then, like most of the PC using public, I fell for the GUI sales pitch of Windows, and I became soft. Now I feel like there are times when the gooie interface lives up to its acronym, and much like the thick mud it might be named after, trying to function in it just drags me down. Working in vi isn't exactly helping me to set speed records at this point, but I'm attributing that to my clumsy keyboarding and lack of familiarity with it. There are tasks to which each interface is more suitable than the other, which means one should be practiced at both to optimize performance and possess the ability to select the right tool for the job. Besides, it's good for your geek rep to be seen working at a command prompt instead of a flashy desktop. It's that pioneering spirit and all...
