Those who have no life of their own, or who missed chapter one in the ongoing saga The Life of Ben Birdsill, can revisit the discussion postings from our week one assignment. To titilate the rest of you, and to have fodder for this assignment, I will offer up another glimpse into my thrilling existence.
Benny's 305 Fuller, Helena, MT 59601
In 1993, in an effort to bring both good jazz and good espresso to the people of Helena, Montana, I opened Benny's restaurant. The goals were to provide
- A jazz club ambiance
- Affordable, interesting fare
- Occasional live jazz
- Good coffee
- A place people liked to gather

come on in (84K).I am proud to say both that Benny's is still there, and I am not. Restaurants have the highest failure rate of any small business (well, except for maybe... dot coms?) so the fact that this one has survived for nine years is pretty neat. I only owned it the first 3 years, so most of my credit for success is imaginary. Sometimes you've just got to take it any way you can get it!

Anyone who has done restaurant work knows how hard it can be, which is why I'm glad to be out of it. The high turnover in help, the crunch of getting slammed at meal times, and the drudgery of clean up and prep work make it a poor competitor to sitting at a keyboard. It was my stint at Benny's that made me appreciate the wisdom in the saying "Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it."
Planning a party? Here's an applet that will let you know when folks will be howling at the moon! It also serves as a good little date and time clock.
